THEATRE NEW WEST ANNOUNCES AUDITIONS FOR "THE PRISON PLAYS"

Following on the heels of it's critically hailed production of BENT, Theatre New West announces auditions for "The Prison Plays"-WOMEN BEHIND BARS and FORTUNE and MEN'S EYES.

WOMEN BEHIND BARS by Tom Eyen, who received a Tony Award for his book of the musical DREAMGIRLS, first appeared Off Broadway in 1976, with Divine playing the role of the prison matron. The playwright based the dialogue and plotlines on the exploitation films of the 1950's. It takes your worst women's prison nightmare to the nth degree and makes it so horrible that it's hilarious. The comedy is set in The Woman's House of Detention in Greenwich Village, and the 10 woman cast includes a range of social and psychological "types."

FORTUNE and MEN'S EYES by John Herbert is a powerful play in which a young man in prison learns what self-preservation is all about, as he must become the sexual slave of a stronger inmate in order to survive. It enjoyed a sensational run on Broadway with Sal Minneo in the lead role. It was also made into a film in 1971 with Michael Greer in the role of Queenie (the role played by Joe Watts when the play was produced in Houston in the 1970's). It has strong language and brief nudity, and uses prison homosexual activity as a framework around which to base a plea for prison reform. It also has a great deal of humor.

WOMEN BEHIND BARS has a cast of 10 females. Some of the female roles will be played by men in drag. FORTUNE and MEN'S EYES has a cast of 5 males (4, 18-30 "youths"), and a guard 45-50. Auditions are by appointment, but walk-ins will be accepted. For "Women" prepare a two minute comedy monologue and/or read from the script. For "Fortune" prepare a two minute serious monologue and/or read from the script. "Women" will open in mid February and run for several weekends, then "Fortune" will open and run several weekends, then they will run in rep for several more weekends. Call Artistic
Director Joe Watts for an appointment and/or any questions, 713-522- 2204.

Must be smart with strong improvisational skills, work well in an ensemble setting, and be willing to travel. Multi-lingual a plus.

Jagjeet - mid-twenties; wants to put his middle class upbringing behind him and live the Playboy lifestyle. Wants this job for the women.

Suzee early to late twenties; drop dead gorgeous woman who is not afraid to use her looks to get what she wants. A successful news reporter in a small town, she got tired the accusations that she was sleeping her way to the top and has decided to break free from the industry.

Since then, the two have never been apart. They are cool Christians who worship each other with a cultish intensity. Francie is a Caucasian Asia-phile.

Larissa - early twenties; innocent-looking, "girl next door" type. This plain Jane is a woman of a thousand faces, a consummate actor. Everyone thinks they are her best friend, and yet no one seems to know anything about her.

Devaughn - late 20's to mid 30's, African American; when he's on the job, this sensitive, intelligent handsome man seems more like a professor that wandered off campus, but after hours, the glasses come off and he is a Superman to ladies looking for love.

CASTING SOMETHING CALLED HOLLY FEATURE FILM

Non-Union. Director: TBD. Something Called Holly is about a 20 year old girl who moves from one world of values to another. But it also portrays themes of responsibility, admission versus accountability, conflicts with opposing values, idealism versus grim reality, and urban versus suburban lifestyles. Holly is introduced as a strong willed girl, who makes her own decisions in whatever circumstances life may offer, but over time, is confronted with the reality of her lifestyle, becomes 'unable to see the forest through the trees', and struggles to find a way out. The 'way out' seems to come by way of fate, the gods, or perhaps just raw coincidence (with a bit of luck). Her uncle Jake and the abandoned remains of her family - a family destroyed by sibling disputes and rivalry - have discovered her lifestyle and whereabouts and decide to bring her back home. The story unfolds as Holly tries to gain new footing in her new world, but needs to overcome her old world values. She struggles to find comfort in a family that feels obligated to her and tries to love her back again. Location: TBD; starts: TBD

Breakdowns:

HOLLY - Female / 18-24 yrs. / White. Requires Nudity: 20-year-old. She is described as the 'ideal everything pleasing about a girl with bright Atomic Pink hair in pigtails.' Nudity and simulated sex required (guaranteed no full nudity to print). Be willing to temporarily dye hair. Be in great physical shape. Dance background a plus.

BILLY - Male / 15-17 yrs. / White. Requires Nudity: A senior in high school. He is a not-so-stupid jock, but nevertheless very naive. Must be prepared to buzz hair to 1/2'. Be in great physical shape - grappling background a plus. Partial nudity and simulated sex required.

BRITNEY - Female / 11-14 yrs. / White: A freshman in high school. Desires independence and strives for it. She's a sweet innocent bud waiting to bloom, bright-eyed and hopeful. Be in great physical shape. Dance background a plus. (An 18 year old to play fourteen is preferred, but may prove difficult to find, so casting is open to all young ages with parents' permission.)

JAKE STIMPAND - Male / 41-50 yrs. / White: A functioning alcoholic writer who strives to be a responsible parent. He is in his early 40's. He can be found in front of the keyboard most nights drinking an absurd amount of Wild Turkey. Need to be willing to grow a beard - quick facial growth a plus.

DENISE STIMPAND - Female / 41-50 yrs. / White: Jake's wife, mother to Billy & Britney. She does nothing against Jake's drinking habits. In fact, she may be enabling through non-action. She is in her early 40's. She maintains order in a very domesticated household while still very much in love with her husband.

MARTIN BEDFORD - Male / 31-40 yrs. / White: A high school teacher. He is in his mid to late 30's. He continually struggles with what is the right thing to do as well as what is most practical and realistic. He is the older Bedford brother. Simulated sex without nudity.

TOM BEDFORD - White. Requires Nudity: In his late 20's, the younger Bedford brother is a strong-armed bouncer that wears a cocksure smile as if perpetually chewing gum. He is Holly's 'more than a friend'. He lives with her. Nudity (full frontal negotiable) and simulated sex required.

JOHN - Male / 18-24 yrs. / Any Ethnicity: A 19-year-old hedonist. He is Billy's old friend who just returned back to his childhood roots after spending some time abroad. He returns to find everything the same except himself.

JANINE - Female / 31-40 yrs. / Any Ethnicity: In her early 30's, she's looking to settle down and start a family. She thinks she found the right man: Martin Bedford. But his concern for better financial stability before pursuing parenthood puts an eventual strain on their relationship. Simulated sex without nudity.

MIDDLE-AGED AND 20 SOMETHING ACTORS-STAGED READING OF SCREENPLAY

I am directing a staged reading of a feature-length screenplay. The script is darn funny and we want to bring it to a larger audience in the next couple of months. We require middle-aged and younger actors who are available to audition in person in the next week or two. We are casting for the following roles: Middle-aged roles: STEVE is a happy nihilist in the vein of Homer Simpson. His failures as a father balance nicely with his drunken philosopher's wit. ROGER is a third-rate captain of industry-type. The owner-manager of a minigolf course, he aches for more but can't get it. STELLA, Steve's wife. Her wits are dimmed by depression and its attendant pharmaceutical substances. This actress will also read several smaller roles. Younger Roles: JULIE female, 20's, is cynical and darkly funny. Looking for an actress who is pretty but not necessarily gorgeous, believable as both cynical and sincere. FAIRBANKS male, 20's, is a rich prick whose mind cannot reach beyond the narrow world of his own arrogance. Need an actor with the ability to deliver the dialogue in a funny, wannabe grand, voice but with no irony; Fairbanks's denial of his own mediocrity is absolute. We also need several 20-somethings, male and female, to round out the cast and play several roles apiece. These range from local skater-punks to patrons at a minigolf course. The film is about a young man who returns to his hometown, a small New England beach community, ready to throw in the towel and give up on his dreams. He comes back to his former sweetheart, dysfunctional family, and a town that once viewed him as a celebrity but now barely recognizes him. Sound familiar? Send me a headshot. I guarantee a good time on this project. Both SAG actors AND non-SAG actors are welcome. There is no pay. At your earliest possible convenience, please email a headshot and resume to mikey@invisibledowntown.com. I will get back to you about audition details. From: michael.palmer@post.harvard.edu
