London Short Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, 2014 NAMM Show, 56th Grammy Awards, are highlights in January's Global Media and Entertainment Industry


Irvine International Film Festival at Laguna Hills anticipates a festival running through January 16 where industry members can network and host a venue for the public to watch film and interact with film makers mostly through Q and A after the screenings. On January 11, "Karen Black: On Acting" will be a screening followed by a panel discussion with the director, Russell Brown that was given by the late actress who was an Academy Award nominee and Golden Globe winner. In 75 minutes, the in-depth interview from this very respected performer of her generation covers everything from perfecting regional accents to finding a character’s inner needs. There is a scheduled International Cinematographers Guild Panel Discussion on January 12, with the presentation of 10 short films honoring the best of ICGs emerging cinematographers.

Multi Emmy award-winning actor, Ed Asner, a former Mary Tyler Moore show regular and past president of SAG, is IIFF's 2014 recipient of the festival's "Lifetime Achievement Award" as an actor and will attend January 12 for a special screening and discussion. John G. Avildsen, Oscar winning Director of "Rocky" is the festival's 2014 recipient of the "Lfetime Achievement Aard" as director and will be in person on January 16. Festivities begin with an Opening Night Party and concludes with an Award Show at which Oscar nominations will be announced.

The London Short Film Festival is now in its 11th year in the City of Westminster district. During the nearly two week run from January 10-19, screenings are run out of a number of independent cinemas and venues in the area showcasing short films and interactive events. There are special event sessions that are planned as well. On January 13, the British Council stages an event appealing to both filmmakers and those interested in developing a career in the festival sector. On January 14, TorinoFilmLab, an international organization supporting young talents from all over the world through training, development and funding activities, and with a principle focus on first and second feature films, makes a presentation. Following this, Cinema Jam conducts a panel discussion outlining three perspectives on how people working in the short film format can build a viable career. On January 15, Royal Academy of Dramatic Art conducts a session specifically designed for directors on how best to work with actors. On January 16, ThinkSync offers a music supervision session for selecting the right track for a short film. Later on, a panel of industry experts from London Film Academy and the Institute for International Film Financing present the most recent insider knowledge and tips on how to secure film funding.

Other London Short Film Festival special event screenings will include: a programme of inventive shorts made on a shoe-string budget on January 10, a comedy selection in association with the British Film Institute’s Future Film for younger audiences on January 11, the first of three documentary programmes in this year's festival, screened January 12, an eclectic mix of animation, documentary and experimental footage offered in this year's Music and Video program, January 13, the BFI's Gothic season with a selection of disturbing and thought provoking shorts titled "The Gothic and the Grotesque" on January 14, and "Celluloid Traces" drawn together in a program of experimental work, on January 19. The London Short Film Festival is meant to be a mecca for the UK’s young creative talent combining independent shorts, plus live music, training, parties, art and fashion.

Celebrating its 30th year from Park City, The Sundance Film Festival showcases dramatic and documentary films from emerging and established artists, innovative short films, filmmaker forums and panels, live music performances and film composer events, while seeming to add to the program listing of events and activities year over year. In addition to discovering filmmaking's newest talent through the Festival's program of documentary, dramatic, and short films, Festivalgoers experience live music performances, panel discussions with leading filmmakers and industry figures, cutting-edge media installations, parties celebrating the Festival community, and more.

The 2014 Sundance Film Festival opens with screenings from the competition film line-up, as well as the opening of New Frontier. A planned fundraiser and kick-off for the 2014 Sundance Film Festival takes shape as an evening to celebrate independent artists and their work. This event includes cocktails with filmmakers, reserved seating at the Day One screening, dinner with artists and everything ending with a party at Legacy Lodge at Park City Mountain Resort. This year, Sundance Institute is honored to congratulate President and Founder Robert Redford on his Golden Globe Best Actor nomination for his role and performance in J.C. Chandor's film 'All Is Lost'. In addition, the Institue congratulates Julie Delpy on her nomination for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for her performance in Richard Linklater's 'Before Midnight'.

On the festival grounds, YouTube on Main Street will be hosting the filmmaking community to daily activity that include live Sundance Film Festival production, screenings, panels, happy hours, and much more. Canon U.S.A., Inc has planned a January 20 panel discussion and screening spotlighting the craft of cinematography in the field of Microcinema. Panelists will share valuable insights, anecdotes, and technical knowledge, as well as discuss their real-world experience with the Canon Cinema EOS line of professional digital cameras and lenses. To celebrate the U.S. premiere of Doug Aitken's project, The Source (evolving), the artist, with art collector, Maurice Marciano, will discuss how ideas begin and the future of creativity in the 21st century. The January 18 talk is to be an exploration across creative disciplines -- film, visual arts, music and architecture.

In April, Sundance offers its third Sundance London program, presenting a cross-section of films fresh from Sundance Film Festival – a mix of documentary and narrative features, made by first-time and established directors, and short films from around the globe. Sundance London is presented by Robert Redford, Sundance Institute, and AEG Europe. The closing night Awards Ceremony and Reception ends with the Awards Night Party at Basin Recreation Field House.

About 31 miles down the road (in a manner of speaking) from the Sundance Festival in Park City, Slamdance Film Festival has carried on its tradition serving as a showcase for the discovery of new and emerging talent and nurturing new independent artists and their cinematic vision for 20 years now. For its 20th anniversary, January 17-23, Slamdance has planned Special Screenings, Beyond and Shorts programs, the premiere of the DIY documentary that follows the historical development of the Do-It-Yourself indie film movement. An expanded short film programs include 62 American and International productions including 24 World, five North American and eight U.S. Premieres. The 2014 Shorts showcase includes Narrative, Documentary, Animation, Anarchy and a new Experimental Program.

The Slamdance Screenwriting and Teleplay Competition is a mainstay of the festival. The competition consists of four categories: feature, short, horror, original teleplay/webisode. Awards are given to the top three scripts in each category. In addition to that, JuntoBox Films and Slamdance will present the new Grand Prize for the best feature length screenplay. MixBit.com, and The Slamdance Film Festival have joined forces to launch a new trailer contest that gives emerging Slamdance directors a chance to create their best trailer for the 2014 Slamdance Film Festival. To compete, filmmakers whose films have been accepted into the 2014 Slamdance Film Festival will agree to upload their trailers to MixBit.com, where Slamdance attendees and the MixBit community can remix the high quality clips and repurpose the trailers in new and creative ways. The competition goes live December 6th, 2013 at www.MixBit.com/Slamdance and will close January 3rd, 2014.

Slamdance counts among its alumni many notable writers and directors who first gained notice at the festival, including Christopher Nolan, Marc Forster, Jared Hess, Benh Zeitlin, Lynn Shelton and Lena Dunham. Oren Peli’s PARANORMAL ACTIVITY originally acquired from Slamdance went on to gross over $190 million at the Box Office. In 2013, more than half of the Slamdance competition features were picked up for VOD distribution. Each year significant cash and service prizes are awarded to all Sparky Award recipients. Slamdance offers selected feature and short films theatrical showings during the following year through the Slamdance On The Road program.

NAMM is the anticipated music products industry trade event of the year based in Anaheim, that features the latest innovations and gear from more than 1,400 exhibitors and nearly 4,500 brands from around the world. From January 23-26, visitors get a close-up of the latest Pro audio sound technology, training, skills refinement in the Hands-On Training (H.O.T.) Zone and a stage where you can see it in action, refine your skills and improve the quality of your productions and attend the NAMM TEC Awards. To get the party started, there will be the NAMM Pre-Show Block Party, starting at 17:30 on January 22. The night features live music from Bernie Williams and Gil Parris, plus networking, food trucks and a beer garden at the NAMM GoPro Stage on the Grand Plaza.

Reflecting on a trend of a strong growth trajectory and the Electronic Dance Music and club-music craze attached to it, over 300 brands will debut in the area of DJ-related gear at the 2014 NAMM Show. EDM grabs center stage every night of the NAMM Show on The Venue Stage presented by Pioneer DJ. Located between the arena and the Hilton, the Venue stage will play club music from 17:00-20:00 Thursday and Friday nights. On Saturday night, DJs sponsored by Monster Products take the stage.

This year's NAMM experience will also include a group music-making experience at the show on three occasions: an "All-Industry Drum Circle" will be hosted by REMO Inc. on January 24; Conn-Selmer, Inc. will sponsor a "pBone Trombone Workshop" where elementary students with little to no music background can create a brass instrument musical experience, on January 26; the third annual Uke Circle with ukuleles provided by Kala Brand Music, is set for January 26.

The Grammy Awards are set for January 26 this year and will take place in Los Angeles. The show will be broadcast in high definition and 5.1 surround sound on the CBS Television Network from 20:00-23:30 (ET/PT). The show also will be carried on radio worldwide via Westwood One, and webcast online at GRAMMY.com and CBS.com, and on YouTube. The GRAMMYs are a peer-presented award honoring artistic achievement, technical proficiency and overall excellence in the recording industry, without regard to album sales or chart position. A GRAMMY is awarded by The Recording Academy's voting membership to acknowledge this excellence in the recording arts and sciences. Two-time GRAMMY winner LL COOL J returns as host of this year's GRAMMY Awards.

Some performers announced early for this 56th Annual GRAMMY Awards® telecast include: current GRAMMY® nominee Daft Punk; nominee Kendrick Lamar joined by nominees Imagine Dragons; nominees P!nk and Nate Ruess (of FUN.); and a special "GRAMMY Moment" featuring two-time GRAMMY winner Merle Haggard, three-time GRAMMY winner and 2014 Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Kris Kristofferson, seven-time GRAMMY winner Willie Nelson, and current nominee Blake Shelton. This will be Daft Punk's first television performance since they last performed on the 50th GRAMMY Awards telecast in 2008. Merle Haggard will be performing on the GRAMMY stage for the first time, and this will be P!nk's and Nate Ruess' first time performing together on network television.

Kendrick Lamar has seven nominations: Best New Artist, Album Of The Year and Best Rap Album for Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, Best R&B Performance for "How Many Drinks?" (with Miguel), Best Rap Performance for "Swimming Pools (Drank)," Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for "Now Or Never" (with Mary J. Blige), and Best Rap Song for "F***in' Problems" (with Tauheed Epps, Aubrey Graham, Rakim Mayers and Noah Shebib). Two-time GRAMMY-winning group Daft Punk are up for four awards: Album of The Year and Best Dance/Electronica Album for Random Access Memories and Record of The Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for "Get Lucky" (with Pharrell Williams). Imagine Dragons, three-time GRAMMY winner P!nk, two-time GRAMMY winner Nate Ruess, and Blake Shelton each have two nods.

The 56th Annual GRAMMY Awards are produced by AEG Ehrlich Ventures for The Recording Academy. Ken Ehrlich is executive producer, Louis J. Horvitz is director, and David Wild and Ken Ehrlich are the writers. Established in 1957, The Recording Academy is an organization of musicians, songwriters, producers, engineers and recording professionals that is dedicated to improving the cultural condition and quality of life for music and its makers. TransVergence Summit, HollyShorts festival, Beijing International Radio, TV and Film, Social Media Brazil, are highlights in August's Global Media and Entertainment Industry

Chicago's Black Harvest International Festival of Film and Video specializes in presenting new work by independent filmmakers from Chicago and around the world. This year’s festival includes sixteen feature films and thirty shorts. Approximately 40 percent of the films were produced in the Chicago area or involve artists or subjects particular to the region. As always, the festival features, where possible, personal appearances by filmmakers to engage in audience discussion. There are special events and parties too. At the festival’s opening night on August 5, when Golden Globe-winning, In one planned special event, Emmy-nominated actress and playwright Regina Taylor will be handed this year’s Deloris Jordan Award for Excellence in Community Leadership.

In another Black Harvest International engagement, NBC 5’s LeeAnn Trotter MCs the program, "A Black Harvest Feast", which includes Chicago filmmaker Evan Allen-Gessesse introducing his short film 'Eric's Haircut'. Other festival special events are special advance screenings of 'Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey, a profile of Kevin Clash, the African American Muppeteer who brings the beloved character Elmo to life; and VIVA RIVA!, an action, neo-noir thriller from the Congo. And for those working to get a film into production, on August 14, there will be a panel discussion "How to Get a Movie Made" -- a free DIY workshop covering every aspect of production for the aspiring independent filmmaker. The festival closes September 1.

The universal adaptation of multiple platforms and devices has fragmented audiences and forced content creators and marketers to find new ways of storytelling, branding and fan engagement. The TransVergence Summit in Hollywood, August 7-8, is a conference for content creators, branders and technologists to expand their transmedia knowledge in order to engage audiences across multiple platforms. At the featured Story Hackathon event of the Summit, the session will be a real-time, 24-hour competition during which five teams of four partners work to develop a cohesive narrative across multiple platforms. Open to writers, designers, filmmakers, developers and more, teams will design a cohesive narrative spanning three or more technological platforms and execute a single one. Informative sessions will cover vital areas such as: transmedia, immersive media, publishing, branded content, second screen, storyworlds, over-the-top television. Co-located with the Summit is the very first West Coast Story Hackathon as well as the Start-Up Salon.

8 Sided Films is an active film and webisode production company, based in North Hollywood, focused primarily on the sci-fi genre. The company is presently in production of a full length feature film under writer/director Tennyson E. Stead titled, 'Quantum Theory', the story of Chelsea and Roe, two brilliant, snarky women of science, who develop a prototype with the power to alter reality... until it's snatched from under them by L.D.I., a ruthless and powerful defense contractor.

With a focus on short film produced 30 minutes of less, the ninth annual HollyShorts festival will feature more than 300 short films in competition. International and local next-generation filmmakers will file into Hollywood, August 15-22, for screenings, galas, world premieres, panels and networking events. This year, the HollyShorts Film Festival will open with a feature film. Festival alumni David Rodriguez’s dramedy, 'Last I Heard', will have its Los Angeles premiere on opening day. HollyShorts is awarding two all-expense paid international trips for this year’s winning filmmakers. The overall Best Short Film top prize winner of HollyShorts will win two complimentary tickets to visit Wellington, New Zealand courtesy of festival sponsor StarNow. While in New Zealand, the winner will get to present their film at a local film festival and meet local industry professionals, along with $1K NZD spending cash.

For the second year, HollyShorts is indulging in a competition with NociCinema's NociCortinFestival 2013, another short film festival of the Southern-Italian region of Puglia, at the heel of the Italian peninsula. Hollyshorts will choose a selection of works from among the films submitted to NociCortin festival to be screened in August at the Ninth Annual HollyShorts Film Festival, and among these films, one will receive the Special HollyShorts Grand Jury Choice Award. The director of the winning film from NociCortin festival will be flown out to Los Angeles to present their film to the American public. HollyShorts Film Festival will include: an opening night ceremony at the TCL Chinese Theatre (formerly known as Grauman’s), fest screenings, filmmaker Q&A’s, industry panels, and private receptions happening in venues throughout Hollywood during the entire week of the celebration.

Pensacola Para Con convention will interest fans of science fiction, fantasy, horror, costuming, comics, renaissance, gaming, anime, indie films, paranormal. It is a multi-genre convention for toys, comics, horror movies, original arts, collectibles MMA, wrestling, but will offer something for everyone, including: anime, manga, film, art, comics, sci fi, gaming, celebrities, and more. There will be celebrity meet and greet, discussion panels, screenings, demonstrations, workshops, and contests. This year's convention, running August 17-19, will help raise funds for American Cancer Society - Making Strides against Breast Cancer. Among special attractions people are encouraged to attend are: investigations at the Pensacola Victorian Inn and Gray House, Seville Quarter Zombies, Geeks and Freaks Masquerade Ball.

Some of the film veteran guests scheduled to appear at Pensacola Para Con include: Gil Gerard (Buck Rogers), Richard Epcar (Animation Voice Actor), Cindy Morgan (CADDYSHACK and TRON), Jason Faunt (Power Rangers and Resident Evil 6), Ari Lehman Jason: (Friday the 13th), Michael Berryman (The Hills Have Eyes, The Devil's Rejects, Star Trek), Theodus Crane (AMC’s The Walking Dead), and many more.

Broadcast & Cable is a trade fair covering television, radio and telecommunications engineering of Latin America. The Sao Paulo event is directed at professionals, entrepreneurs and executives in the production and distribution of multimedia electronic content market, including open and subscription TV, radio, internet, industry, production and telecommunications.

Running August 20-22, Broadcast and Cable will have a focus on advance technologies and applications used in production, distribution, testing and operation of TV, internet, radio and other multimedia/transmedia electronics. The International Film Awards Berlin -- the ifab -- was founded as a non-profit organization dedicated to the creation, distribution, preservation and support of independent cinema created by mostly unknown filmmakers. The awards presentation gives out several awards, including Best Lead Actress and Actor ifab Awards, Best Director ifab Award and the Grand Prize: the Brandenburg Gate Award. Festival venue, The Sputnik, is an arthouse movie theatre located in Kreuzberg, one of Berlins artistic districts. Kreuzberg has emerged from its history as one of the poorest quarters in Berlin in the late 1970s, to one of Berlin's cultural centers in the middle of the now unified city. Presently, Kreuzberg is one of the trendy districts of Berlin, known for its lively art scene, cafés, bars and restaurants and a bustling nightlife.

Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) will recognize siblings Bryan “Birdman” Williams and Ronald “Slim” Williams of Cash Money Records as Icons at the 2013 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards, at a New York City ceremony on August 22. The  event, formerly known as the BMI Urban Awards, celebrates the songwriters, producers and publishers of the most-performed r&b/hip-hop songs of the previous year. The BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards will include an all-star musical tribute to this year's Icons, as well as the presentation of the Social Star Award and R&B/Hip-Hop Songwriter, Producer and Publisher of the Year crystals. BMI’s President and CEO Del Bryant and Catherine Brewton will share the evening’s hosting duties with recording artist Ray J. The Cash Money enterprise they founded continues to nurture young talent into internationally recognizable standouts: Young Money Entertainment – the joint venture with Lil Wayne – has steered the rise of recording artists Drake, Nicki Minaj and Tyga. In 2012, Cash Money celebrated the sale of 500 million songs worldwide, a feat made possible by its top-tier artists and focused leadership. This invitation-only event will also honor the world’s premier songwriters, producers and publishers of the most-performed r&b/hip-hop songs of the previous year, as well as the presentation of the Social Star Award, and R&B/Hip-Hop Songwriter, Producer and Publisher of the Year.

With a focus on social networking, Social Media Brazil aims to bring together key people to its Sao Paulo location to discuss and debate various aspects of social media and its cutting edge implementation. For 2013, the August 24 expo will be divided into two rooms -- one will be dedicated on lectures related to national and international issues and the other room will be based on interviews and discussions. The one-day conference agenda provides opportunities for learning, networking and some fun through numerous discussions and interactive sessions. The many aspects and utilization of social media will be discussed and debated by professionals and enthusiasts from different parts of the world.

The Internationale Tanzmesse is a biennial discussion forum, festival and marketplace for communicating and networking in the field of contemporary dance. At the Tanzmesse, international dance companies and artists present their work live on stage and choreographers, dancers, agencies, presenters and cultural institutions network and present their work in a marketplace. The internationale tanzmesse NRW also hosts numerous international gatherings and meetings. The Tanzmesse is a project of the Gesellschaft für Zeitgenössischen Tanz, based in Cologne. The original aim of the Tanzmesse was to create a platform for dance companies from North-Rhine Westphalia where they could introduce and present choreographic work from the region to a larger regional audience as well as to the professional dance world.

The Tanzmesse's goal has always been to form a presentation around performance and discussion. The companies could perform their works as well as talk about their projects in a marketplace environment. In 1997, the second Tanzmesse in Essen expanded the marketplace to include international companies and organizations to become a “World Market of Dance Regions”. As an opportunity for all the professionals and individuals who are totally consumed with all aspects of dance, the event which will run August 27-30 has been structured by the organizers to provide owners of dance companies and cultural organizations with a platform through which they can gain visibility for their projects.

This year Telluride Film Festival will be celebrating its 40th Anniversary as it opens its annual festival August 29 running through September 2. To commemorate this occasion an additional day has been added to the usual four-day Festival, making room for a five-day stretch of special programming and festivities. Telluride Film Festival, along with the Town of Telluride, has revealed it is preparing a new venue in time for the 40th Anniversary celebration. The Werner Herzog Theatre will be situated in Telluride's Town Park Pavilion and become the Festival's most technologically advanced theatre accommodating 650 pass holders.

Banff, New Music Seminar, Cannes Lions Advertising Festival, Aruba Film Festival, are highlights in June's Global Media and Entertainment Industry

Formed in 1958 as the first trade association for a single genre of music, Country Music Association promotes Country Music mainly through its two signature events, CMA Music Festival and the CMA Awards. Through June 10, the CMA Music Festival will be held in Nashville, and it is filled with special events, parties and very interesting things to do. Here's a run down of some of them: ABC TV returns for the 2012 CMA Musical Festival and takes a big hand to get the party started when it hosts The ABC Summer Block Party. This year’s block party, hosted by Bradford Anderson (“General Hospital”) has entertainment for the entire family. Located on the historic Broadway strip in downtown Nashville, the party will include daily activities, fun games and exclusive screenings from some of ABC’s new fall pilots. And Nashville’s own Grilled Cheeserie Truck will be on site with sandwiches provided and inspired by ABC’s “The Chew”. There will be Q&A sessions and autograph signings held with the new fall series stars from “Nashville”. This year The Buckle is a destination for families to come and enjoy activities, games, live entertainment, demonstrations, free samples, autograph signings, and more. Fan Alley will have many new activities and exhibits in 2012 including: The Chevrolet Ride and Drive, entertainment provided by the Ultimate Air Dogs, appearances and autograph signings by Country artists, live music, giveaways and prizes. Soleil Bella Beach in the Walk of Fame Park is a new highlight of this year’s Music Fest where visitors can hear a variety of artists, enjoy outdoor games and activities or relax on a sand beach. A new free feature for 2012, the BMI Tailgate Party, features a strong selection of BMI’s songwriters and artists warming up the audience before they enter LP Field for the Nightly Concerts. And highlighting the international appeal for Country music artists, 22 Country artists representing four different countries and territories including Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom have been announced for the 2012 Global Events showcases. The Festival is slated to be aired over the ABC television network on September 17, at 8/7 CENTRAL.

The 2012 Tony Awards goes live in New York City June 10, presented by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing to celebrate excellence in the theatre. Australian film actor Hugh Jackman, is receiving a Special Tony Award® and will attend the night's Awards ceremony. This year, The Tony Awards will include a live broadcast from the middle of the Caribbean Sea, where Royal Caribbean International’s Oasis of the Seas’ cast of Hairspray will perform a show-stopping number. Banff World Media Conference and Festival, opens in Alberta running till June 13, putting the focus on Canada and international territories. NewFilmmakers Los Angeles invites interested parties to their film screening series and after-party event in Hollywood on June 11 featuring a filmmaker lounge throughout the evening. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the directors of screened films, the actors and crew, and take part in an audience Q&A. There are pre-receptions and after-parties for each program. The New Media Film Festival opens for a two day run June 12 in Los Angeles, and at red carpet opening night, wine bar drinks and Hor Dourves will be served and recording artist Irina Maleeva entertains with her one-woman musical comedy show. For the extent of the festival a resident distribution partner is set to review NMFF submissions and online distribution outlets have offered to interview and showcase content that is relevant to their site's genre. These partners include but are not limited to: Mingle Media, Stay Tuned TV and Gal Time. In addition to the media showcase, attendees have access to the New Media Marketing Table to distribute business cards and other promotional materials. There will be a Networking spot to meet fellow New Media filmmakers, artists, producers, above and below the line crews, thought makers, implementers, distributors. In one scheduled June 13 New Media Panel, a group will focus on new avenues to monetize content, new platforms that are being launched to interact and monetize on a global scale. According to the Hawaii Tourism Authority, the Maui Film Festival is one of only six "Signature Cultural Events" in Hawaii-and the only one that takes place on Maui. The Festival, running June 13-17, opens with the Twilight Reception at Capische? restaurant. Aside from film screenings in the outdoors under the stars, the festival is notable because of traditional events including: Opening Night Twilight Reception at Capische? Beginning June 16, the Los Angeles Indie Music/Film International Summit opens for two days of music, film, keynote speaker activities geared to: music producers, film producers, artist managers, agents, radio personalities, music and film executives, promoters, publicist, attorneys, songwriters, recording artists, unsigned artists, CD manufactures, distributers and record label representatives. There will be panels, workshops, presentations, live indie stage and major artist performances, one to one mentoring, J-Lounge kiosk (demo listening, EPK and videos) and an industry trade show. The event celebrates new music with two days of showcases featuring over 100 original acts on three stages. Music industry rights association SESAC leads a workshop to educate songwriters and publishers on their right to be compensated for having their music performed in public. Another panel of Hollywood Casting Directors will discuss the secrets to landing the perfect role, and what they are looking for from actors at the audition. Summit organizer Jadar Entertainment’s mission is to showcase, promote, and market Independent artists, actors, producers, songwriters and record labels, etc. and their ideas. Presented as a seminar for the new business of music, the New Music Seminar in New York City will present sessions offering vital industry survival information, with every delegate receiving the NMS New Music Business Guidebook, that has promotion and marketing tips, contact information, forms and guidelines on how to succeed regardless of the kind of music. The NMS Networking Lounges placed throughout the seminar area facilitate business networking. Attendees are encouraged to pre-arrange meetings in the comfort of the various NMS Lounges where they are able to eat, drink and make new contacts. The Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival will be held in Cannes Cedex from June 17-23 celebrating creativity in commercial communications. In terms of international advertising awards, more than 24,000 entries from all over the world are showcased and judged at the Festival and winners take home the Lion trophy presented at four award ceremonies throughout the week. The Festival is also a global meeting place for advertisers, advertising and communication professionals. Delegates from 90 countries attend seven days of workshops, exhibitions, screenings, master classes and high-profile seminars by notable industry leaders. To celebrate its 10th anniversary Grupo ABC based in Latin America brings President Clinton to Cannes Lions to talk about how advertising can help build a better world. Opening June 19, Palm Springs International ShortFest is a seven day competitive festival screening approximately 300 films from 40 countries in a series of 90 minute programs. All films submitted whether screened in the Festival or not are eligible to participate in the Market which consists of a video film library and 20 viewing stations open to sales agents, distributors and other industry representatives. The Festival has twenty competitive categories with prize money, film stock and production services valued at over $70,000 to be awarded for first and second places in addition to a "Best of Festival" award and a "Future Filmmaker" award. All first place winners in the Live Action and Animation categories will automatically become eligible for nomination consideration by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in the short film categories. A 3D and Virtual Reality Expo (IVR) in Tokyo showcases a platform for research and expertise groups, including users from manufacturing industries, amusement industries, broadcasting stations, image producing companies, content production companies, telecommunication companies, public offices, universities and research centers who are looking to buy solutions for their businesses, to try out and experience the latest 3D technology and high definition image technology used in the latest 3D products and technologies (ultra-high definition displays, AR, and 3D broadcasting). Founded in 2010 by film producers Jonathan Vieira and Giuseppe Cioccarelli, the third edition of the Aruba International Film Festival is rededicating itself to a two-fold purpose: advancing worldwide understanding of Aruba and its people, and encouraging emerging Caribbean filmmakers by offering them hands-on training from accomplished professionals. Within the Festival's Caribbean Spotlight Series’s, the “Aruba Flavor” competition highlights and rewards the work of talented local filmmakers and forms a platform for networking opportunities with fellow Caribbean peers and industry professionals from around the world. The AIFF Film Lab workshop, entitled 96 HOURS, will provide intensive hands on training in the filmmaking process over a four-day period of time during the festival. And there will be an acting class coordinated by arts education director Maureen Heffernan, who will lead students through a series of exercises to totally embrace a role, as well as to learn the technical requirements of working on a film set. The Festival will be casting for an international photo shoot (paid) and is looking for actors, actress, children and extras. The Casting will be on June 24 the whole day and on June 25 from 10:30 am - 1 pm, taking place at the Paseo Herencia. The photo shooting itself is from the June 28 till July 4. As a special musical feature, Marc Antony performs in concert June 23, at the AIFF Harbor Arena.

Dance Camera West's annual dance film festival opens June 27-30 in Los Angeles, and presents an international selection of dance media and special screening events at venues throughout southern California. Dance Camera West embraces dance media in any dance style or genre. Categories include: screendance, experimental movement based film, short films, features, documentary, installations, and interactive dance media. The festival presents its first "Dirty Dancing Dance-A-Long" on June 22 in partnership with Los Angeles Film Festival and Grand Performances. Free pre-show salsa lessons and professional dancers on stage will perform along with the film. The closing evening program will consist of the Hammer Evening Doc of "Wayne McGregor Going Somewhere," a creative documentary film by Catherine Maximoff, and the evenings program leads into the Awards Reception.

Established in 2003, IN THE PALACE is an International festival dedicated to short films under 45 minutes in length. This year it opens June 29 to run into July 7 in the Black Sea town of Balchik. The Festival aims to present and contribute to the development of contemporary film art in Bulgaria, Europe and the world, creating a favourable environment and platform for young filmmakers and established professionals. Traditionally, the Festival’s core are the International and National competitive programmes, accompanied by various special screenings. Filmer Forge is the business centre of the festival. Each year producers, distributors, buyers and sales agents gather to meet and network with fellow industry colleagues at the festival. Filmer Forge includes four resource areas: the Exhibition Hall with market stands, business meetings, presentations, Media Rendez Vous; Pitching sessions - that will include the awarding of 10 financial grants; Market Video Library of short films and a database of filmmakers, decision makers, festivals, broadcasters (on-line industry guide); Market Screenings. The town of the festival (Francis Ford Coppola spent 11 days at the palace shooting scenes of 'Youth Without Youth'.) has a history spanning over almost 3000 years. During that period it was known as the ancient Greek colony of Krouni, the Greek and subsequently Byzantine fortress of Dionyssopolis, mediaeval Bulgarian town Karvouna and the Ottoman and later again Bulgarian town of Balchik. One of the most interesting places in the vicinity of the town is the architectural park complex "The Palace" (venue of the festival), built by the Italian architects Amerigo and Agustino within the period 1920-1936. The town has also been the former summer residence of the British princess and Romanian Queen Marie of Edinburgh.

Kennedy Center Honors, TV 3.0, ABC TV's New Year's Dance Party, Film Florida Meeting, some highlights in December's Media and Entertainment Industry

In Monte Carlo, the Monaco International Film Festival runs through December 5, and the Eighth Edition Angel Film Awards take place as an established art house cinema event recognizing themes of peace, love and movies from around the world, short and feature film, and separate screenplay award nomination. Red carpet screenings will take place at the new Art Novo Theatre & Press Lounge in the Novotel, Monte Carlo.

For this year’s Kennedy Center Honors, happening December 5 in Washington, DC, the selection of recipients to be honored at the 33rd annual national celebration of the arts are: singer and songwriter Merle Haggard; composer and lyricist Jerry Herman; dancer, choreographer and director Bill T. Jones; songwriter and musician Paul McCartney; and producer, television host and actress Oprah Winfrey. The gala will broadcast on CBS on December 28 from 9-11 pm, ET/PT, and the 2010 Kennedy Center Honors Gala concludes with a supper dance in the Grand Foyer.

At this year’s International Film Festival Summit in Las Vegas, a special break-out event with members of the Austin Film Festival staff will discuss the organization and operation of their annual eight day festival and conference as well as their year round events. Another break-out event, “Festivals Impact on Social Change and Culture,” a group of experienced panelists will address the impact film festivals have on the way we see the world. There will also be an Opening Cocktail Reception on the Exhibit Floor, and the "Dinner With Strangers" event at this annual event that runs December 5-7.

Every Monday, a singers search and open mic is held in Manhattan, at a noted Broadway lounge right around the corner from the David Letterman show. Talented newcomers and experienced singers are all welcome. A pianist is resident or bring your background tracks or CDs. The showcase, “Gotta Sing!”, which continues on December 6 is open to the public, inclusive of all ages and all styles, and is produced by the long-running showbiz team of Billy Shepard and Judi Jourdan who also produce their own television show "How to Succeed in Show Business By Really Trying" shown on Time Warner Cable every Tuesday at noon on channel 56.

The One Mic Nite Open Talent Showcase is another performer’s open mic, and a blend of indie music or dance, theatre, poetry, and art of a decidedly urban influence, backed by the grooves of the resident Artist DJ on the turnatables. The open jam session, preceded only by the house band, is an Open Mic acoustic-style event, and an evening of informal networking for artists of all kinds presented by industry veteran Marcos Luis starting after 9:30 pm and currently being presented from a venue on Manhattan’s Lower East Side.

Tbilisi International FilmFestival, founded in 2000, is a registered organization of “Prometheus Cinema Art Centre”. As a diverse cultural event the festival is directed toward familiarizing the Georgian public with new trends of world cinema and promoting development of the Georgian film industry. The festival is partnered by Georgian National Film Center, Ministry of culture, monuments protection and sports, Association of Independent Filmmakers of South Caucasia, Georgian Events Company, “Hot Chocolate” and “Kino” magazines. Goethe Institute together with the Georgian-German company Medea present a program of new German films “Made in Germany” on an annual basis. A French films show is also held within the framework of the festival with Dumas French Culture Centre assistance. This year’s festival runs December 6-12.

This year’s TV 3.0 Innovations in TV Content and Delivery Conference in Los Angeles, December 7-8, enables you to hear and network with over 50 expert speakers from across the TV and content value chain, who will present and debate the latest innovations in TV and content delivery. Some keynote speakers include: Verizon Communications' Senior Vice President, Eric Bruno; President of CBS Vision, David Poltrack; ESPN Vice President, Bryan Burns. A New York MPSE Sound Show, produced by the Motion Picture Sound Editors organization and Manhattan Edit Workshop, takes you behind the scenes of a major motion picture to understand the intricate sound work crafted by the movie’s team of audio artists. In this December 9 session the group will explore the sound design of Paramount Pictures’ Shutter Island, directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Excerpts from the movie will be presented with special “pre-dub” mixes to illustrate the variety of elements used to create this particular sonic environment of the film.

Film Florida is a not-for-profit group that assumes a leadership role in Florida's film and entertainment industries by representing a coalition of interests, including private industry, local film commissions, industry associations and labor organizations, holds its Quarterly Marketing and Business Meeting, December 9-10 in Key West. SEEKING JAZZ DANCERS BY APPOINTMENT, ASTORIA

Tues, Mar 20. 10AM and 11:30AM - Company Members. 1PM - Apprentice Members. Astoria Dance Centre, 25-95 Steinway Street, Astoria, NY. Push Factor Dance Company in New York City is looking for male and female jazz dancers. Push Factor is an alternative jazz dance company. Currently there is no pay for rehearsals. There is pay for performances, teaching of classes and workshops. Free dance classes on a weekly basis. Please call to make an appointment. Versatility in other dance forms is a plus (i.e. tap, hip-hop). Attire: Females: dance shorts and leotards preferred. Wear hair down and make-up. Males: dance shorts and form fitted top preferred.
