ASCAP Membership Meeting, Game Developers Conference, Latino Independent Producers & HBO, SXSW, iHollywood Digital Media Summit, Delray Beach Film Fes

The Miami International Film Festival, running through March 11, uses the geographical and cultural position of Miami to be a special platform for the exhibition of international and US films, with a special focus on Ibero-American cinema. Festival panel, roundtable discussions, and seminars explore the craft and creative process of cinema, as well as the business of making, financing, and distributing a film. Screenwriter Rock Shaink of TV series "The Dreamer", and Chris Klug also of "The Dreamer" series, and Creative Director for Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment, will speak at the monthly Alameda Writers Group (AWG) meeting happening March 3 in Glendale. At a March 3 workshop titled "The Rights of an Independent Contractor in Film" attorneys Patrick Reddy and Timothy Emery explain the rights of an independent contractor, what the clauses in the contracts you’re signing actually mean, what production companies can and can not put in their contracts, among other topics taking place in Seattle. ASCAP hosts a general annual membership meeting explaining ASCAP operations and membership on March 5 in addition to a pre-meeting seminar titled "We Create Music," conducted with a panel of songwriters and composers, in New York City. A meeting of the Game Developers Conference explores next-gen, handheld, current game development, and collaborations with the film industry, when it assembles March 5 to 9 in San Francisco. The monthly ASCAP Song Source Music Feedback Session in Nashville is an opportunity for ASCAP members to receive feedback on one of their songs from ASCAP staff and music industry professionals. Participants may bring one song on a CD with lyrics to the March 7 session. The 25th Annual Canadian Music Week mixes informative, intensive conferences, cutting edge trade exposition, award shows, Canada's biggest New Music Festival and nightly performances, with over 600 showcasing bands at over 44 live music venues in downtown Toronto.

At the International Festival of Films on Art in Montreal, March 8 to 18, all artistic disciplines, including dance, music, painting, architecture, literature and film, will be represented by FIFA whose primary mission is to increase public awareness, knowledge and appreciation of the arts by promoting works by artists and professionals from the fields of film, television and video. On March 9 the Seventh Annual Texas Film Hall of Fame Awards will pay tribute to the Honorable Ann Richards, former governor of Texas, who acted as the ceremony's emcee for four years. Columnist Liz Smith, who Richards inducted into the Texas Film Hall of Fame in 2001, will serve as emcee at the awards show, in Austin. The well regarded SXSW or South by Southwest Conferences and Festivals in Austin, from March 9 to 19, puts on the third edition of its mobile media festival, SXSWclick in addition to regular festival offerings. ShoWest Global Motion Picture Industry Conference, where motion picture professionals and theatre owners from around the globe assemble for four days of educational seminars, screenings, and unique sponsored events including the 22nd Annual Al Lapidus Golf and Tennis Charity Tournaments, opens March 12 in Las Vegas. This year's focus at the two-day iHollywood Forum Digital Media Summit opening March 13 in Hollywood will be on how social networking and user-generated content will revolutionize Hollywood's definitions of content and who creates it, and a "pitch for funds" session at the Digital Media Venture Forum.

Delray Beach Film Festival will screen multi-award winner "My Brother, The Movie" - http://www.myspace.com/mybrotherthemovie - starring Vanessa Williams and Tatum O'Neal, three days ahead of its March 16 national release at AMC Theaters, and the festival will present some screenings on the beach. Asia Film Financing Forum at The 31st Hong Kong International Film Festival is a film project market, from March 20 to 22, that aims to bring Asian filmmakers with upcoming film projects to Hong Kong for international co-production ventures. Winter Music Conference 2007 offers opportunities for DJs and artists to network and have their music heard through Demo Listening Workshops, CD compilation, DJ and performance stages, DJ Spin Off and other performance events, showcases and release parties (some poolside) throughout the week of March 20 at Miami Beach. At the Nashville based Tin Pan South Songwriters Music Festival and Songwriter’s Symposium, from March 26 to 31, special guest performances, professional instruction from songwriting veterans, and intimate group breakout sessions, form a fund raising backbone for the NSAI's legislative efforts in Congress. Over 40 producers, theater companies, writers and directors will be sitting in on two days of auditions for actors with and without musical talent, starting March 31, hosted by Theater Resources Unlimited, a not-for-profit organization in New York City.

SURRONOMER CASTING FOR "STAIRCASE," SHORT FILM, CALIFORNIA

Surtronomer films is casting the short film "Staircase." SAG Contract: Short Film Agreement. Location: California. Staircase is the story of one man's obsession with the ocean. It's an obsession strong enough to rip him away from his family and everything he holds dear in life. Seeking: Neil is a rugged, handsome, blue-collar man in his mid-thirties. He’s spent the last two weeks traveling up the California coast in search of perfect waves. He is a quiet, soft spoken, yet stern man. Surfing experience for this role would be extremely useful, but is not required. Natalie is an early-twenties woman traveling down the coast to Mexico, looking for warmer waters. She is a confident, free-spirited, independent woman committed to a life by the ocean on her own terms. Mickey is a rough, mid- twenties male who will hold on to his home surf break any way he can. He is devoted to protecting his line-up from transplants, visitors and the kooks. Surfing experience for this role would be extremely useful, but is not required. Having spent all his time cultivating his cemetery, Emmett is forced to face the complex reality that his life has consisted of nothing else. Wildsound Feedback Film Festival, Folk Alliance Music Conference, 79th Academy Awards, HBO Comedy Arts Festival Highlight February Media Events

Song writing duo, Alan and Marilyn Bergman, are celebrated in the American Songbook series of Lincoln Center in New York on February 2 in a musical program that features performances by Brian Stokes Mitchell, Sandy Stewart, Lari White, Lillias White and others. Screenwriter/Author/Actor George Clayton Johnson, and Senior Managing Partner of Creative Convergence, Philippa Burgess, will speak February 3 at the Alameda Writer's Group Meeting series in Glendale. ASCAP opens the second season of Jazz at Lincoln Center on February 5 in New York with ASCAP's "Month of Mondays," a program showcasing talented young jazz creators. The International Film and TV Finance Summit gets underway February 5 for three days in Los Angeles and among other things offers perspective on the growing role of Hedge Funds and institutional investors in global film finance. "Animex Awards Animation and Gaming Festival," February 5-9 in Middlesbrough, focuses on the best of British animation from the past and present, in addition to Animex International Student Animation Awards, previews of animated feature films and a two-day celebration of computer games, Animex Game. At the ASCAP Song Source Music Feedback Session, February 7 in Nashville, participants can receive feedback and discussion of their work. Rupert Murdoch and Barry Diller are keynote speakers at this year's Digital Hollywood Media Summit in New York on February 7 and 8, covering the full range of entertainment delivery systems. At the Berlinale - Berlin International Film Festival approximately 350 films, mostly European premieres, are screened and this year talented young people from around the world involved in all areas of filmmaking are eligible to apply to the Berlinale Talent Campus. The Folk Alliance Music Conference based in Memphis opens February 21, a pre-conference day, featuring special advanced workshops in songwriting, recording techniques, internet opportunities and more, in addition to regular conference offerings like the Performance Alley showcases running through February 25. Three days of international and local short films, feature films, animation, and filmmakers surprises will begin in Beaufort February 22, but to top it off, Chefs of the regional South present culinary treats, part of the Beaufort Film Festival and Tribute to the Great Chefs of the South. Ellen DeGeneres has been selected to host the 79th Academy Awards telecast over the ABC TV network from Hollywood, and an exhibition of 50 Golden Statuettes is on view at Hollywood & Highland Center, February 9-24. Grammy award winning country music legend Kenny Rogers will be featured entertainment at the Golden Mike Award in honor of Kenneth W. Lowe and The E.W. Scripps Company February 26 in New York. In Aspen, the HBO Comedy Arts Festival kicks off February 28 continuing through March 4, accessible via several types of passes and packages that also provides access to the many festival parties hosted throughout. On the heels of the UNESCO Honourable Mention for Peace Education award, the One World International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival set to run February 28 through March 8 in Prague will host over 50 discussions of various foreign, political, human-rights, civil society and ecological themes in conjunction with the festival.
